... one birth at a time “If a Doula were a drug it would be unethical not to use it. “ (John Kennell, 2001)
A Birth Doula is a woman trained and experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a woman during labor, birth and the immediate postpartum period. For many doulas, supporting women in childbirth is a labor of love. Birth doulas are trained to provide continuous emotional support, physical assistance and facilitate communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her medical caregivers. Doulas help laboring women with relaxation, pain coping techniques, effective positions and movements to help labor progress. They encourage women to trust their bodies and the process of birth. Doulas assist women and their partners to achieve the birth they want in the hospital, birth center, or at home. They have been at the mother’s bedside through medicated, non-medicated and cesarean births. Today, doula care provides the laboring mother with the physical and social support that women in many cultures have historically enjoyed and valued. (Copyright © by DONA® 2002)
