DONA International DONA International, the Premier Doula Organization, is an international non-profit organization of doulas who are trained to provide the highest quality labor and/or postpartum support to birthing women and their families. DONA was founded in 1992 by Dr. Marshall Klaus, Phyllis Klaus, Dr. John Kennell, Penny Simkin and Annie Kennedy. DONA International is the oldest and largest international doula organization. DONA's Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics are unique and have set the standard for doulas throughout the world. DONA doulas are taught to work within evidence-based standards of practice. During labor, these skills are medically proven to make a true difference in the experience of birth, decreasing costly interventions and increasing maternal satisfaction. DONA's vision is "A doula for every woman who wants one."
