If birth is a normal physical process, then why should I need a class to prepare for this natural event?

Many expectant parents ask this question. The answer is simple: a quality birth preparation class will give you the tools to make good decisions for yourself when you are in labor.

Countless times have I heard women and their partners say about their birth “I wish I would have known that before - then I could have made a different choice!”

Or, in the words of Diana Korte and Roberta Scaer:
“If you don’t know your options, you don’t have any.”

During the course of a normal labor there are many, many decisions to be made - by you! Only in a true medical emergency are choices clear cut and limited, and this is quite rare. Contrary to TV and movie portrayals of birth, 95% (!) of labors proceed without a major health crisis. Any medical treatment today is based on Informed Consent. It is up to you as expectant parent to become informed, for both your own and your baby’s benefit. A good birth preparation class is an excellent and proven way to achieve a better birth.

This is not just my personal opinion. With the U.S. Cesarean rate at 31.8% in 2007 (CDC Data), the International Cesarean Awareness Network, ICAN, puts at the very top of their list of Things You Can Do To Avoid An Unnecessary Cesarean:

“Read and educate yourself. Attend classes, groups and workshops inside and outside of the hospital environment.”

It is true - not all classes are created equal! When I was pregnant with my first baby, I managed to stumble across the worst birth preparation class in a huge metropolis! I truly believe it did more damage than good. So, after I had become a professional doula seven years later, I set out to become a Certified Childbirth Educator offering classes that were a cut above the rest - informative, practical, and most importantly effective in helping parents shape their birth in their own special way. Evaluations, reunions and statistics are all evidence that my classes really work well for the families I serve.

I am always amazed that the majority of women will go into their birth without learning about the process, the standard management, and the options involved in having a baby today. Learning about the birth process and exploring options and choices has the power to improve both, a women’s experience and the course of the actual birth events. Scientific studies have shown that parents who prepare well for the birth of their baby have better birth outcomes. My independent classes are designed to support your individual journey towards becoming informed and prepared for this major life transition.

In birth, there is no right or wrong way; there is only your way.
